Reviewing the new McDonalds products one bite at a time

The Orange Flavour Chocolate Pie

So you may have slightly noticed that there hasn’t been any post about desserts recently… Well there is a very good reason for that…

I feel McDonalds were taking the easy options by picking boring promotional desserts E.g. Rolo milkshake and KitKat McFlurry. I mean you can’t just take a random chocolate item, stick it in some ice cream, throw either chocolate or caramel sauce in and expect people to think it’s a good idea. So out of protest for lack of originality I decided I wouldn’t review anything until McDonalds done something original or a little bit more out of the box.

That’s why when I saw that they were doing this pie I was happy. Now when I go to McDonalds I never have an apple pie. For one, I don’t really categorize it as a pie, since when do pies really come like that?

Anyway…

I took a bite out of it to find that it was nothing like what I was expecting at all. I was thinking it would have a terry’s chocolate orange type of taste, so the orange wasn’t to overpowering. I was wrong!

What I actually got was a lot of a horrible orange flavour and no taste of chocolate whatsoever. So from this I was extremely disappointed, there was so much potential. I just see how they can really call it a chocolate pie when it doesn’t taste like chocolate!

So despite it being poor I’m McDonalds thought outside the box!

The Winter Warmer with Tomato & Red Pepper Sauce

100% beef patty

Bacon

Smoked Cheese

Batavia Lettuce

Cool Mayo

Tomato and red pepper sauce

All within a cheese topped bun.

.

The Taste

Bigburger with plenty of cheese on top. Quite soft too.

Taste wise it is pretty good bacon goes well with the smoky cheese.

There is a pleasant texture from lettuce and no tomato to make it too watery.

Some spicy heat and a hint of vinegar from the pepper sauce which I quite like

Very reminiscent of the sort of burgers you get in the “Taste of…” range

Very respectable

Great Tastes of the World – Week 4 – The Chicken & Chutney Indian

The Chicken & Chutney Indian

Crisp Chicken

Shredded Lettuce

Onions

Spice Onion Chutney

Yoghurt and Mint Mayo

Toasted spice bun

The Taste

Spicy smell of the burger.

Good cruchy texture with chicken, mintiness from the mayo reminds me of mint sauce but works well, onion chutney not over-powering but adds some sweetness and the lettuce holds it together.

The spice bun works well with the contents with fair bit of paprika.

Overall I was pleasantly surprised by this burger and it was great to see something different done with chicken.

A surprise…

Great Tastes of the World – Week 3 – The Chilli Cheese Mexican

The Chilli and Cheese Mexican

100% Beef Patty

Cheese

Tomato

Batavia Lettuce

Sour cream

Chilli and Bean Sauce

in a Cheese and Paprika Focaccia Bun

The Taste

Spicy paprika from the word go from the bun although the bun is perhaps a bit stodgy.  Sour cream does not add a whole lot but is ok. Chilli bean sauce is a nice addition but not spicy enough especially given the large amount of sour cream. The tomato adds little very little. A burger that is ok but the bun could be better and either the tomato or sour cream goes as their nothingness takes away from what would otherwise be a tatsy and spicy burger.

Better than last week but not by much:

Great Tastes of the World – Week 2 – The Australian BBQ Supreme

The Australian BBQ Supreme

100% Beef Patty

Bacon

Cheese Slices

Batavia Lettuce

Onions

Cool Mayo

Sweet and Tangy (BBQ Sauce)

Square Sesame Seed Bun

The Taste

A reasonable burger but messy, the onion add texture and bite which is good but have a tendency to fall out (whilst coated with BBQ sauce or Mayo) and can ruin your latest pair of Chinos.

I don’t think the bacon really adds much although I do quite like the sauce and the bun is tasty. I can’t really see how this is very Australian and it could have been much much better, that said it had a lot to live up to following the Spanish Grande.

A decidedly average:

5/10.

Taste of the World – Wk1 – SPAIN – The Spanish Grande with Chorizo

The Spanish Grande with Chorizo

Paprika-topped bun

100% Beef Patty

Chorizo

Red & Yellow Roasted Peppers

Mature Cheddar Cheese

Batavia Lettuce

Bravas-style sauce (bit like salsa)

The Taste

The bun is surprisingly soft and despite the colour the paprika is not that spicy although some warmth builds as you eat.

This is a messy one but has a good range of texture and a little saltiness from the chorizo is quite nice. I really like the salsa which adds some freshness but also more flavour and spice. The peppers add extra spice texture and tasty and the mature cheddar really shines.

Really different and easily beats any of this years taste of America with a resounding.

Wispa Mcflurrys

So a couple of days ago McDonald’s released their Olympic range of food. So I took on the Mcflurrys, they have the Wispa and Wispa gold Mcflurrys (see what they did there…) they have definitely had the Wispa Mcflurry before so it’s not really a great choice.

20120713-173053.jpg

I got myself a Wispa and Wispa gold in hopes they’d be something different but as Wispa gold is only Wispa with caramel there’s nothing more to expect.

I liked the chocolate sauce in the Wispa Mcflurry it made it a little less bland but unfortunately the Wispa bits being very small you couldn’t tell it was bubbly really and it seemed a lot blander than a normal piece of chocolate. The Wispa gold was the same really but I prefer the chocolate sauce to the caramel sauce.

Overall again it wasn’t a great choice but it is the first Wispa gold Mcflurry so they could say its different? Bring back fudge brownie is all I say!

My Journey to Spain

So I took a short weeks break to Spain so obviously I had to go to a McDonald’s to check what things they get that we don’t! As per the usual English style we have hardly anything in comparison to anyone in the world.

I went to two McDonald’s while I was over there so the first one I went to there were to burgers that seemed to be promotional burgers called the ‘NYcrispy’ and the ‘CBO Burger’. The NYCrispy I’m pretty sure was just the same as the New Yorker from the taste of America selection in England. The CBO burger was a pretty simple concept of a chicken, bacon and onion burger.

I later found out that when I visited the first McDonald’s they didn’t actually have a promotion on at the time. I visited one in Palma airport that had started their new promotion for Olympics. They had 3 new burgers, the Chicken Gold, Bacon Spirit and the Beef Passion.  They all had different buns to the regular buns. The beef passion had crisped peppers in it with salsa, bacon and mayo. The chicken gold had the same sort of idea with the salsa and the bacon but has a sauce that looks either like a cheese sauce or mustard. Honestly looking at the bacon spirit I couldn’t see anything really different from the beef passion bar the fact it had caramelized onions.

Other savory food options they had were things like the alternative the chicken mayo which had BBQ sauce instead of mayo. They had 3 different types of the McWrap, they had chicken and bacon, a grilled Cesar and and the beef supreme.

The next different product they had were the ‘Alitas De Pollo’  these were basically just chicken wings with your pick of dipping sauces.

Over in Spain they had several different desserts. Their standard McFlurrys were fairly different to ours over here. They had the usual Smarties McFlurry followed by Peanut M&M’s, Oreo and KitKat McFlurry. Every one came with lots of chocolate sauce or they even asked you  if you wanted caramel sauce instead which i thought was a nice perk.

We went for the KitKat McFlurry
Wasn’t very well stirred unfortunately

They had some strange different desserts in this little cabinet. They had Philadelphia Cheesecake?! a coulant by Nocilla and Tarta by Oreo. They also had some milka products, a milka doughnut and a milka muffin. I thought I’d get the Oreo tarta, it was very strange  to say the least with crushed oreos on top and a cross between yoghurt and oreo fondant in the middle. It wasn’t I admit!

So these are just some of the little extras that Spain get in comparison from us!
